we have reached Mercury Retrograde time again! Mercurywent retrograde last week on Friday 23rd March 2018 and stays in retrograde for a total of three weeks until it turns direct again on Thursday 12th April 2018.
So what else do we know about Mercury?
Mercury as a planet in our astrological chart rules communication. As it is one of the fastest moving planets in the solar system it is hence in retrograde motion between three and sometimes four times a year. Last year was a real biggie as Mercury was actually retrograde four times!
So why does Mercury being retrograde get so much coverage these days?
Well firstly it is because Mercury also rules travel and communication. With so many human beings being permanently hooked up to their smartphones and having apps for this and apps for that, we are actually using technology at a level unparallelled in human society.
And these days, there are so many self professed astrologers out on the world wide web too...who know a bit of this and a bit of that and regurgitate much fear mongering regarding this thrice yearly astrological phenomenon.
Basically folks, several of the planets in our solar system spend up to 60% of their time in retrograde motion. So Mercury turning retrograde, as I have said get so much more of a bad press than it used to, mainly due to all these online self professed astrologers out there now.
Planets in our solar system are basically either stationary, retrograde on in direct motion. Kinda like a car being in either neutral, reverse or driving mode! And so Mercury being the Messenger of the Gods, and hence the second fastest moving planet after the Moon, needs way more rest periods than the other planets.
In Greek mythology, Mercury was born as one of a twin you see, however his twin died and Mercury spent the rest of his life moving between two parallel words, the mortal world and the spirit world, as he endeavoured to communicate with his lost and much loved twin.
When Mercury goes retrograde, what most people don’t know is that there is also a pre shadow phase…which is the three week build up period before Mercury actually goes retrograde and then there is a post shadow phase, which is the three weeks after Mercury turns direct.
And many of ye may already know that Mercury rules communication. However it also rules travel and transport. And when you add in the fact that in the last three to five years it has become more and more common to contact people via so many more means of technology, Whats App, Snapchat, Email, Facebook Messenger,Skype, Zoom, and texting is it any wonder that the myth of what Mercury retrograde is now amped up several times!
When Mercury turns retrograde what happens is really quite simple. it is quite simple folks. It really is. It is a yin time in our lives, for Mercury is a very yang planet. As a planet and as human beings, we need this yin time regularly. It is a time for internal reflection and processing. It is a time for slowing way down, a time to increase the amount of journaling you do, a time for reconnecting with friends and family in real time. Hey, turn off the mobile phones and go for a walk with one or more of your loved ones! Practise more soulful communication. And above all, if communication between you and others is amped up, then take a deep breath, and slow right down. And I mean right down! The text or email you received probably did not mean what you thought it meant. So always, always give the other person the benefit of the doubt.
Several times over.
I really mean this.
Currently, we also have Jupiter in retrograde at the same time. Jupiter went retrograde on March 8th 2018 and stays in retrograde till July 2018. In astrological terms, this is considered a double whammy because Jupiter is a social planet. Jupiter’s energy being retrograde means that it is again, like with Mercury, a time of internal processing. In our natal birth charts, Jupiter rules travel, expansion, higher wisdom, joy and abundance. And unlike Mercury, which is now in fiery Aries, Jupiter is in still deep Scorpio. Fixed water. Deep stillness around So when Jupiter turns retrograde it means a slowing down of our plans for expansion, a re-examining of our higher value system and faith, a re-examining of what we truly have most faith in, and how we want to expand. Do we want to expand property, spiritually, business, our friendships, our value systems? Now is the perfect time to go doubly inwards, and reflect on where our greater and higher consciousness is.
And what more inspiring internet coverage did we have last Saturday, just two days after Mercury turning retrograde, than the amazing “#Marchforourlives” rallies all over the world. The most moving example I think I have ever seen of the positive power of social media. These young kids standing up and saying “enough is enough” For they are the post 9/11 generation. The generation of the lightholders, and the game changers. What is their agenda? It is quite simply, truth, love, safety, and compassion.
How interesting that these rallies all happened when Mercury had just gone retrograde. And so for the next few weeks folks, no matter what you feel about gun control, or Mercury retrograde, ask yourselves this one question...if it had been your child?? In Ireland, my native country, and also in most of Europe, there are almost no guns. The Irish police force are totally unarmed. Always. During the heated conversations my American friends used to have in Lucca, Tuscany prior to the USA presidential elections, I could never understand why the conversation would always turn around to the right to carry arms? Hey, ask yourselves, what is that really about?
So I urge you during this current Mercury retrograde to re examine your value system. Is it your value system, truly? Or one you inherited from someone else? And go journal. If you have never journalled before, go buy a journal then write a few pages a day. It does not matter what you write, it just matters that you do.
For the Sun has also ingressed into Aries, which represents Cardinal Fire. Tis all about taking inspired action. And the current Mercury retrograde is in Aries too. And what else is in Aries?Venus and Uranus are conjunct each other, all also in Aries. Uranus represents radical change, and Venus represents our value system. Both in Aries, Cardinal Fire.
So basically to sum up, this current Mercury retrograde is all about internal inspired speech. Long moments of silence where we pause and reflect intensely before we communicate. As did Emma Gonzalez in Washington DC last Saturday, where for several minutes, her still silence inspired the world to stand still and internally reflect.
When you want a full astrological consultation which will help you so much understand, not only Mercury in your chart, but all the other planets as well then the way forward is to go and have a consult a professional astrologer and stop self learning on the web! And in the meantime, if you feel impelled to utter harsh words to women, stop and reflect. Say to yourself, “Is it necessary is it kind, does it serve the other person to say this?”. And if the answer is no, then don’t say it. Go have a coffee and journal instead!
