Joyful heartfelt times!
As I have written before, during my time in the USA, Thanksgiving was always my favourite time. A time where most people (well, when I lived in Provincetown anyway!), went from Thanksgiving to Christmas to the New Year, taking as many days off in between as they could get away with and doing as little work as possible.
Whole families moving across the USA to reunite with their loved ones for those sacred few days. No fuss or palaver about presents, or trees or tinsel or Christmas decorations. It was all about showing gratitude for the family and close loved ones you have in your life right now.
My first Thanksgiving with spent in Pennsylvania in the home of a dear friend of over 40 years, who had come to our home as a student when I was just 12 years old. She stayed in touch over the decades that followed and when I eventually crossed the Atlantic in 2017, I was blessed to stay with her family for a week earlier that year, returning, as promised for Thanksgiving. Sadly, like several others, that relationship imploded after my late daughter Ruth’s death. But the wonderful memories of being around an extended family table of almost 26 people remain. As do the memories of meeting many other family members of both her and her husband for the first time.
Astrologically Pennsylvania is somewhere I almost moved to during my first three month stint in the USA. I had been fortunate to work out of a beautiful holistic shop in West Chester and fell utterly in love with the place. It had everything I needed – cool hipster cafes (crucial for writing), a holistic and artistic community, plenty of prospective clients, and two good friends nearby. It was a warm, welcoming and laidback place, and also extremely beautiful. Especially in the Fall, which was when I first visited.
But I chose to go back to Boston instead, and from there eventually moved to Provincetown. Where my second Thanksgiving proved to be even better than my first! The day itself was spent in the local Soup Kitchen prepping a larger than usual meal for the local community. From there I cycled onto an Irish friends house where I sat down with a different range of extended family and friends and laughed myself sick for the next four days. Event after event got added onto the next three days and I was invited to them all. These deeply valued friendships remain intact to this day.
After the recent Venus retrograde, how are you in the aftermath of valuing what you now have and love in your life? My own love and I parted ways at the end of the recent Venus retrograde, and despite the ongoing heartache, there is now room in my life for even deeper and more meaningful connections.
With a whole new bunch of people who I am, in fact, far more aligned with.
The ongoing frustrations of finding local groups and classes where I could meet like minded people forced me some weeks ago to down tools and say “That’s it, I’ll just have to start having dinner parties again instead!” and I have. More than ever, as we continue to live in a world increasingly driven by technology, is simple face to face communication important. A quick WhatsApp chat is not at all the same thing. It’s the banter with the waiter while ordering coffee and cake out in a local cafe, or the quick chat with the checkout lady in our local supermarket that we now miss without even realising it.
Local art classes and writing groups got cancelled at almost no notice for me a while ago. Hence I created dinner parties instead as a different way of forming connection. Thanksgiving is the most wonderful time to include extra people in our lives, bring new loved ones into the fold. As my Provincetown friends did all those years ago. For which I remain profoundly grateful.
