The lunar nodes are often overlooked in natal birth charts, yet a person’s whole chart can actually be interpreted just by looking at the lunar nodes.
The Lunar Nodes, unlike the planets, do not actually exist. They are instead, in fact what are known as abstract points in space. The Lunar Nodes, are in fact, imaginary points in space where the Moon’s path crosses the apparent path that the Sun makes, as seen from the earth. This is called the ecliptic path and is where and how eclipses are identified. The location in space of the Lunar Nodes tells us both when and where an eclipse will take place.
Early mankind recognized eclipses as being a portal to God, which is why they are so significant, as it is during an eclipse that an opening exists within human consciousness which allows us to move more easily between several spiritual realms.
The South Node represents our karmic past and default forms of behavior which we revert back into when ever we are pushed too far out of our comfort zone. Which is something we all do from time to time.
The North Node then represents what our soul came into this lifetime to learn and experience. Like the Moon in our natal birth chart, the North Node can also give huge clues as to what our true vocation is.
The Lunar Nodes are also, like the planets, aspected, in your natal birth chart, which means that they “touch” the other planets in our natal birth chart.
The most important “aspect” is when the Nodes “square” any of the planets, as this represents what is known as a “skipped step” in your astrological evolution, which means a step that you often have to go back to, to learn what you missed first time you incarnated into this world.
The Nodes always oppose themselves in our natal birth chart, so a 4th house North Node will hence have a 10th house south Node.
In the case of the Lunar nodes – the sign the node falls in is much more important than the house placement.
So moving to a new location will also usually change the house placement of the Nodes. We may think we are moving to develop our career, or enhance a new relationship, but often it is actually the Lunar Nodes which are calling us to a particular place, usually at a significant time in our lives. The Lunar Nodes can be particularly important when looking at the midpoint lines of a new place as the South Node can indicate where there are previous karmic lessons coming back into our life to be integrated.
The Nodes, like the planets, all take their turn around a natal birth chart. A nodal return takes places approximately every nineteen and a half years, which means that at the ages of 19, 38, 57, 76, and if we live long enough 95. A nodal return can be a time when people from the past come back into our lives after several years. It can also be a time when we are irrevocably drawn back to somewhere we lived during a previous nodal opposition fourteen years earlier. Again, we are drawn back to places of the past for healing and integration of that lesson to take place.
So a time spent on a Lunar Node line is very different energy from time spent on any planetary lines. If we are drawn to somewhere where the North Node conjuncts our IC (latin for home and roots) then we are subconsciously drawn to somewhere where we long to really and truly put down roots. Often the time of a nodal return is when we do this – maybe at age 37. And then again at age 57, we may well uproot and relocate again.
For the Nodes remember, are the Nodes of the Moon. So they are linked to home, property and a deep sense of belonging.
