Our Ascendant is one of the most crucial parts of our natal birth chart. And when we move, our Ascendant relocates too!
Your Ascendant is the lens through which you view the world, the filter through which you see everything.
It is also the first part of us the world sees. Our Ascendant, then, is best described as our default operating system, similar to the operating system on our computers.
The planet which rules our Ascendant (which is also known as our Rising Sign) is the planet which rules our whole chart. So you might be a Leo Sun, and be Capricorn Rising – in which case, Saturn will be the planet that rules your chart.
One of the first things an astrologer will look at, then, is the house and sign which Saturn is placed in, and how many aspects other planets make to Saturn.
Famous double Saturns!
Take Bono for example. A gifted musician and philanthropist who many Irish people love to hate. He is frequently regarded as being a “complete airhead”, yet in fact the only planet Bono has in air is Ceres in Aquarius. His Sun sign may be Taurus, but his rising sign is Capricorn, and so Saturn rules his chart.
In addition, his Saturn is angular on his Ascendant. So there is a double Saturn theme going on very strongly in his chart.
Bono is far from being an airhead! What most people don’t know about U2 is that, as teenagers, they hired a manager very early on in their career – Paul McGuinness. They also made the highly Saturnian decision to always split their income four ways between the band, no matter who wrote the songs. Forty years later they are still rocking ‘n rolling.
Another double Capricorn is Prince Harry, who is also Capricorn Rising, with Saturn however on his MC. He was therefore born with a strong sense of duty. But moving has changed the way that manifests in his chart.
Prince Harry’s relocated ascendant
In Los Angeles, where he is now living, his relocated Ascendant changes to Libra, hence Venus becomes his chart ruler. Saturn also becomes far less accentuated as it is now in his second house of finances, movable talents, and skills.
Saturn does however, trine his Midheaven, and that means there is a strong undercurrent in his chart around wanting to be of service to the world – but in a different manner than before.
What happens when our Ascendant is relocated
We are frequently deeply unaware of the energies of the planet which rules our natal Ascendant. It is like the cloak we wear when going out into the world. And moving has a profound effect on it.
So our natal Ascendant may change from being Gemini Rising with Mercury being our chart ruler (where our natal filter system is all about communicating) when we move. And in the new place we might then become Taurus Rising with Venus as our chart ruler.
I have written before about Venus being about so much more than love and seduction – Venus is also about our value system, our finances, and our overall sense of fairness. So we may well attract more money in this new location. Or, if there are challenging aspects to Venus in our new location, we may instead have to work harder to feel valued.
In Provincetown on Cape Cod, for example, where I lived for a glorious year and a half, I became Aquarius Rising, and Uranus became my chart ruler.
And on Cape Cod I really was able to finally become my eclectic highly authentic self in a way that had not really been possible while living in Italy.
As always, the transits you are going through while deciding to relocate will play a large part in how your experience of your new location will play out.
A private person, with natal Scorpio Rising, may long for the carefree abundance of being Sagittarius Rising for a while in a place where they get to have adventures, and travel and learn just for the hell of it!
